EV Jargon Buster

New to electric vehicles? Here's a plain-English guide to the terms and abbreviations you'll encounter on the road and at the charger.

EV Jargon Buster

A quick-reference glossary of the terms, abbreviations, and acronyms every UK EV driver should know. Understanding battery terminology is essential for informed EV ownership.

EV(BEV)

(Battery) Electric Vehicle. A 100% electric car with no petrol engine — runs entirely on its battery pack. Distinct from a PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid), which carries both a battery and a combustion engine.

kW vs. kWh

kW is the speed of the "pump" — how fast power flows. kWh is the size of the "tank" — how much energy is stored. A 7kW home charger fills a 70kWh battery in roughly 10 hours; a 150kW rapid charger does it in under 30 minutes.

CCS

Combined Charging System. The standard European and UK plug for DC rapid charging, found at most motorway services and rapid charge hubs including Gridserve, Osprey, and BP Pulse. Learn more about charging networks and connectors. The large two-pin connector sits below the standard Type 2 inlet.

Type 2

The standard plug for slower AC home and "destination" charging — used at home wallboxes, hotels, car parks, and supermarket chargers. Typically delivers 7–22kW. Most UK EVs have a Type 2 inlet combined with CCS capability.

Regen

Regenerative Braking. When you lift off the accelerator or brake gently, the motor acts as a generator and reclaims kinetic energy back into the battery. One-Pedal Driving modes maximise this effect, recovering meaningful range in stop-start conditions. See our EV mastery guide for more on efficiency techniques.

GOM

Guess-O-Meter. The range estimate displayed on your dashboard — so called because it adjusts constantly based on recent driving style, temperature, and speed. It's a useful guide, but treat it with healthy scepticism on a cold morning or at motorway speeds.

ICE-ing

When a petrol or diesel (Internal Combustion Engine) car blocks an EV charging bay. One of the most frustrating experiences for EV drivers on a long journey. If you encounter it, report it to the provider rather than confronting the driver.

V2L

Vehicle-to-Load. A feature on some EVs (notably the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6) that lets you use your car battery to power external devices — from a kettle and laptop at a campsite to an electric bike charger. Draws from the main battery pack via a standard socket.
